I have to admit- I am a writer, but I don't understand punctuation. I have very flexible quasi-rules in my head which I apply haphazardly. Here is a great article by Elsa Neal, one of the editors at Blood Red Pencil, that sorts out the dilemma of one of the most common punctuation marks- the comma. Give it a read, it really helped me.
